Blue Monday? I don’t know her

We’re still doing reflections over resolutions on Foundations to Flights. Actually, perhaps it’s time to turn our reflections into resolutions especially as ‘Blue Monday’ is now behind us…

Lockdown life (3.0 in the U.K.) is hard. For many, it is a case of just surviving in the 4 walls they call home. For me, it is distracting myself with work – work I am very grateful to have in such a time. How is it for you? Are you surviving, striving or stepping in faith? Maybe a combo of all! Days branded as ‘Blue Monday’ definitely don’t help either (is it really a thing?!Trigger Warning: this linked article makes reference to suicide).


But now that Miss Blue has bounced and as we approach the end of January, I want to help you shift your perspective. I want to help you put in place a practise to make life as we currently know it, just a little bit easier.

Journal Activity

Follow these 4 steps:

  1. Rewind – look over your 2020 highlights, I promise you there were some highs! If that feels too overwhelming, rewind just 1-3 months.
  2. Reflect – set a timer for 2 minutes, close your eyes and reflect on those experiences. Your kitchen filled with the scent of your favourite cooked meal or a new recipe you smashed. Facetime/Zoom/Google Meet filled with friendly faces and laughter. The fresh air on your face when you walked around the block in between meetings…
  3. Record – now note down your highlights – try and keep as much detail as you can. Next, ask yourself the following questions: how did you feel during those times? What did you enjoy doing? Who did you enjoy spending time with? To go a step further, set your timer again, reflect further and record some further points
  4. Run – tomorrow isn’t promised, so what can you run with now? Pick out one things from your record that you can commit to today. What experiences, activities & individuals can you reconnect with to make your now nicer?
